Nearly 300 university students from 20 member countries of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) met from 21-25 July in Incheon, Republic of Korea in the context of the third WFUNA Asia and Pacific Regional Model UN Conference. The theme of the conference was "Achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015: Proactive Approaches beyond Conventional Wisdom".

In considering how to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, the delegates discussed in a Plenary and three Committees, the need for pursuing alternative energy sources to ensure the future against threats of climate change, diminishing the risk of natural disasters especially in impoverished areas, advancing towards a knowledge-based economy, and regional collaboration to stop human trafficking.

The delegates adopted by acclamating several resolutions and the Incheon Declaration, which advocates drawing on support from international organizations, civil society and the private sector to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

AUNA delegation, with support of UN DPI Armenia and Department for International Development of the British Embassy (DFID), took part in the "WFUNA Asia and Pacific Regional Model UN" Conference for the first time. It had a very successful participation and was warmly welcomed by all the participants of the Conference.

Armenian delegation succeeded in creation of new relations which helped to prepare a ground for further collaboration with different UNAs.

In the official opening ceremony of the third “WFUNA Asia and Pacific Regional Model UN” Conference the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon commended students at the APMUN conference on the Millennium Development Goals for exploring proactive approaches to the achievement of the Goals by 2015. Ban Ki-moon’s video message encouraged the students to "build a better understanding of our United Nations – what it is, what it does, and what it can do".
The opening ceremony was attended by high-level guests including the Mayor of Incheon, Ahn Sang-soo, Deputy Minister, Ambassador Oh Joon, WFUNA Secretary-General, Pera Wells, and former Executive Secretary of ESCAP Kim Hak-su.

Surely, APMUN served as an excellent tool in extending the value of the Model UN to the Asia Pacific region and the Armenian delegation does its best to be one of the multipliers of those values. For more information, please visit www.apmun2008.org
