Yerevan State University Model UN

Nearly 35 students from 1st, 2nd and 3rd courses of the International Relations faculty of the Yerevan State University (YSU) took part in the Model UN conference conducted by AUNA leaders in cooperation with YSU Students Scientific Council. The conference was held on 17 December, 2008 in the YSU. It was a simulation of the UN Security Council including two or three representatives in each delegation. The theme of the Conference was the "Georgian-Ossetian Conflict". Prior to the Conference two seminars were conducted and a meeting held by the UN DPI representatives in the UN office in Armenia. The participants were introduced the UN activities in Armenia and the Model UN film was demonstrated. UN DPI also provided the participants with useful and important literature on the UN.

Gyumri Model UN, Shirak Region

AUNA in partnership with Youth Centre of Shirak region and with support of UN DPI conducted a Model UN Conference on August 10, 2008. Nearly 30 University-level students from different Universities of Gyumri (in Shirak region) and active members of youth NGOs participated in the Model UN Conference dedicated to the International Youth Day. Security Council was simulated on “Self-Determination of Kosovo” where the issue of peacekeeping was actively discussed. This fitted well to the global commemoration of “60th Anniversary of UN Peacekeeping”.

Kapan Model UN, Syunik Region

On July 1, 2007 Model UN Conference was held in the Youth Center in Kapan, Syunik Region of Armenia. The participants were students and NGO young representatives living in Kapan. Before the day of the conference, AUNA held preliminary sessions. During the Conference the participants simulated the work of the Security Council with “The Arab-Israeli Conflict” on the agenda. The students were well-prepared for the Conference: they had animated debates and did productive work. In the outcome of the Conference, the participants adopted a resolution. The event was largely covered by local media and the Conference was broadcasted on the national television. Model UN Conference was an excellent opportunity for the participants to see and simulate the work of UN bodies and understand how decisions on the international level are made. They gained diplomatic skills and practical experience good for lifetime.


Series of Model UN in Armenia

Based on the agreement between UN CG and AUNA six UN Models were conducted in Yerevan and the Provinces of Armenia from September to November. After passing the preparation period the participants passed trainings and seminars for getting prepared to the Model UN Conference.

On October 21, 2006 Model UN Conference with the students of different faculties of the Yerevan State University was conducted. Before the Conference day AUNA organized preliminary seminars for participants.
Three seminars were held at the Yerevan State University in the Faculty of International Relations and one seminar in UN DPI.

During the Model UN Conference participants were very active. The conference was very successful. As a result of the Conference appropriate resolution was adopted .Participants were satisfied and expressed their willingness to participate in such event again. In the end they got certificates of participation.

On October 21, 2006, in Gyumri, Model UN took place. Thirty participants took part in the Conference. It was the first time they were playing UN Model and there was great enthusiasm and interest among the participants. They put themselves in the place of the country they were delegating as diplomats. At the end of the conference, there were four resolutions, but it was decided to turn the four into one final resolution. So the draft resolution was adopted. After the Conference, the impression of the participants was excellent. They obtained new knowledge and skills which will be useful to them in their personal life.

On October 24, 2006 Model UN Conference was held in Russian-Armenian State Slavonic University of Yerevan which was dedicated to the 61st anniversary of the foundation of the UN. On this very day in neighboring countries UNA Georgia and UNA Azerbaijan Initiative Group also organized UN Models. The students imitated the work of the Security Council and on the agenda of the Council was “The Israeli-Palestine Conflict”.

Guests from the UN in Armenia were present. The representatives of the UN DPI Mr. Valeri Tkatchouk, UN DPI Information Officer Ms. Armine Halajyan, and the head of the department of Political Science in Slavonic University. Mr. Karen Asatryan, AUNA president had the opening speech after which the conference began.

The episodes from the conference were broadcasted by the local mass media. The students were very well prepared and as a result they had very intensive debates and performed productively. After eight hours of discussions they came to the general decision and represented their final resolution. The Model UN Conference gave the participants a very good opportunity to see how the bodies of the UN work and how decisions on the international level are made. They gained diplomatic skills and a lot of practice which will be useful for them during their lives.

On
October 28, 2006 Model UN Conference was conducted in the Yerevan State Economic University. Students were simulating Security Council and were discussing “Palestinian-Israeli conflict” solution, which is in the center of attention of international community over years. As a result of discussions and negotiations diplomats approved the resolution, and it will be used for both the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and for the international community.

On October 29, 2006 Model UN Conference was conducted in Vanadzor. The Conference was interesting and the participants were enthusiastic about accepting a resolution which would be realistic and acceptable for every side of the conflict. With the suggestion of delegates from Congo, the session started with one minute of respect to the memory of those innocent people who died in this severe and devastating war. The debates passed very actively. The participants were active in convincing others and putting forward their ideas concerning the country they were representing. At the end, after long debates and several draft resolutions, one resolution was formed with the support of all the country representatives,. One resolution was adopted, which was also applicable for the refugee issue. After the conference participants were eager to continue their participation in new models which may take place in future.

On November 12, 2006 Model UN Conference was conducted in Gegharkuniq region, specifically in the center Gavar. The participants were students of Gavar State University and the main team included representatives of different departments.
The preliminary phase engaged five trainings. During those weeks participants were in touch with AUNA members from which they were getting the main part of the information. The students were simulating the UN Security Council. The issue was “Israel-Lebanon” last conflict. The participants were really well prepared both for country presentation and position speeches. Hot debates went on during non formal talks and during direct questions and answers. There was a great enthusiasm and the representatives were very inspired, In the end there was a final draft resolution which was accepted unanimously after little changes.

After the Model, students were very enthusiastic so that they were eager to repeat it again. All of them asked to arrange Model UN once more in the Gavar State University. So this is the best proof of usefulness and effectiveness of Model UN.

On July 23, 2006 Model UN was organized by AUNA in partnership with UN DPI in the UN Building. For the first time the simulation was held in Armenian language. Security Council was simulated and 35 students from different Universities discussed the issue of North Korea.
